Photo courtesy of City of Edmonton Archives.There were many political factors in Italy and Canada that led to successive influxes and droughts of Italian emigration. Political issues also influenced the attitude toward and the treatment of these Italian immigrants.

Few Italians came to Canada before WWI; Italian immigration was virtually non-existent between the two wars due to the rise of fascism in Italy, and to Italy's invasion of Ethiopia; however, there was a huge influx after WWII especially in 1950s and 1960s.
