Lesson 2 - Rationale and Objectives

Rationale

Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students need to develop an awareness of the different Aboriginal linguistic groups in Canada, and how they relate to differences in Aboriginal culture. It is also important for students to understand the connections between language groups and how Aboriginal People migrated across Canada taking variations of the main linguistic groups with them.

Objectives

Knowledge

  • Distinguish between the different Aboriginal linguistic groups in Canada
  • Recognize that migration affected the dispersion of language groups
  • Learn new words from some of the Aboriginal language groups

Skills

  • Categorize the different linguistic groups
  • Practice using and interpreting maps
  • Find relationships between the different language groups
  • Contribute to in-class discussion as active participants in the learning process
  • Express in writing their understanding of Aboriginal language group dispersal
  • Develop understanding of statistics

Attitude

  • Cooperate and work with others who hold differing opinions
  • Develop confidence in expressing ideas
  • Appreciate the diversity and beauty of First Nations languages
