Agricultural InnovationsLand Reclamation
The
Alberta Research Council has released two new varieties of native grasses to
help meet a burgeoning global demand for plant material that is suitable for
reclamation of disturbed land. ARC's Mountain View Junegrass and Sentinel Spike
Trisetum are among seven varieties released to date by the corporation's Native
Plants program for use in landscape enhancement, reclamation and wildlife
management. Both varieties have been awarded certification of eligibility by
the Canadian Seed Growers' Association. Marketing and distribution rights have
been awarded to Prairie Seeds Ltd., of Nisku, Alberta. New crops springing from
these releases provide Alberta's agricultural and horticultural industries with
added opportunity for crop diversification. ARC is one of the few Canadian
organizations developing suitable plants for the reclamation industry.
