Soil and Agriculture

Botanical Research LabAgriculture has long been the mainstay of Alberta's resource industry. Long before oil derricks could be seen on the horizon, farmers have been toiling away on the land, producing wheat and other crops that are so important to our Alberta economy and identity.

Farming may seem like a "low-tech" industry with not many possible innovations,  but the truth is quite the opposite. Farmers are always looking for machinery that will make crop yields higher. They are also ever-concerned about the pests that diminish the quality of their crops, such as insects and weeds. Farmers also need to be on the lookout for ways to keep the soil from eroding away so that it remains rich and fertile for many years to come.
