The Roadmap To Peace
The Road Map to Peace was developed by the United States, the European Union, Russia, and the United Nations as a means to attaining peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The plan was outlined for the first time by U.S. President George W. Bush on 24 June 2002. It called for the creation of an independent state of Palestine to be created along side of Israel. This was a significant event as it was the first time that a U.S. president called for the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
Central to the creation of the state of Palestine was that the Palestinian National Authority established democratic reforms and stopped supporting terrorism. Israel was required to support the creation of Palestine and cease all settlement activity in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The Road Map to Peace is unique because it is supported by the United States, which is Israel’s strongest ally. As well, the Road Map was created entirely by the “Quartet” that included the United States, the European Union, Russia, and the United Nations without direct consultation with the Israelis or Palestinians.
