Partition Plans and the Search for a Compromise Solution
In search of a solution that would satisfy the nationalist aspirations of both the Arab and Jewish populations of Palestine, Great Britain presented a number of proposals for the territory. In 1937, the Peel Royal Commission recommended that Palestine be partitioned into two separate states.
In 1947, the United Nations presented a plan for partitioning the mandate of Palestine. It proposed to establish two states of roughly equal size. Under this plan, an internationally controlled area would encompass Jerusalem and guarantee access to the holy sites for people of both states.
As the plans progressed the Jewish sections received
the more arable land and resources, which was seen as
unfair by the Arab population.
