Focus On: Jerusalem

The ancient city of Jerusalem plays a central role in the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. There are four quarters in the wall Old City that includes Jewish, Christian, Armenian, and Muslim.

The status of the city of Jerusalem has been continuously contested as the 1947 UN Partition Plan, states that the city is an international city. Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the 1949 cease fire line established to separate Jordan from Israel. The line ran through Jerusalem. After the 1967 Six Day War, Israel took complete control of Jerusalem.

Israel has claimed Jerusalem as its capital. The 1980 Jerusalem Law, states that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and it functions as the seat of government. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 states that the Jerusalem Law is in violation of international law.

The Palestinian Authority also claimed Jerusalem as their capital in a law passed in 2000, which was ratified in 2002.
