The creation of Petroleum Clubs
is parallel to the quantity of oil and gas businesses
in urban centers.
Not every city in Canada has a Club, but the ones
that do are home to many petroleum companies’
head offices. The Club is promoted as a meeting
place for those involved in the industry, and others
who work in related areas such as banking and law.
Networking is an important part of the petroleum
industry, which a club atmosphere can provide. These
clubs also host events, professional development
seminars, and speakers from the industry.
Two that exists in Alberta are
the Calgary and Edmonton Petroleum Clubs. Both are
private clubs for members only. Membership is
extended to men and women in any industry. The
Calgary Petroleum Club began in 1948 due to the
boost in business created by the Leduc oilfield. The
Club has moved from its original space
in the Palliser Hotel to their own building in
downtown Calgary. The Edmonton Petroleum Club was
created over fifty years ago and is currently
located north of downtown. Both Clubs are currently
focusing on increasing their membership and attracting younger members to join.

The early days of the Petroleum Club in Calgary are remembered fondly in this except from the CKUA series “Roughnecks, Wildcats and Doodlebugs”.
