Petrochemicals are products manufactured from crude oil and natural gas. Not every petroleum product ends up as fuel. Polyethylene plants produce specialized solvents, called olefins, such as ethylene and propylene, aromatics, and plasticizer feedstock. Other products such as toys, crates, and household items are also made from petrochemicals.

Alberta Energy has a comprehensive site on petrochemicals at http://www.energy.gov.ab.ca/Petrochemical/588.asp
