Part 22: Pipeliners, Part
II
Pipelines are the vital arteries of
Canada's petroleum industry, with just under 200
thousand kilometers of pipe laid down across the
countryside. The politics of the pipeline is an
often intense and contentious world, and becoming
more so as conventional sources of crude oil tap out
and new ones, such as the reserves north of 60, are
discovered.
Oil companies have constantly hunted for new
sources of oil, Companies like Dome Petroleum have
drilled for it in the frozen arctic while companies
such as Syncrude and Suncor have researched and
refined methods of extracting it from such reserves
as the Athabasca tar sands.
Learn about the techniques and challenges
surrounding oil transportation and extraction, and
how such development holds a vital place in the
ongoing evolution of the Canadian petroleum
industry.

Part 23: Roughnecks Around
the World
Peru, Columbia, Algeria,
Iran...these are but a few of the many countries
around the world where Canadians have served in the
international petroleum industry. While the
technical atmosphere in foreign lands reminded many
of the Canadian workers abroad of home, there was a
lot to learn about the social, political, and even
environmental conditions of the places where they
worked.
Oil industry pioneers share their world travel
experiences, recounting the pleasures and the perils
of working and living outside of Canadian borders.

Part 24: The End of an Era
In this final episode of the Roughnecks, Wildcats &
Doodlebugs series, a retrospective of the Alberta
and Western Canadian oil industry is presented.
The highlights of the Alberta petroleum industry
evolution are recounted, from the early beginnings
outside Medicine Hat in 1883 and the first major oil
reserve discovery at Turner Valley in 1914, to the
turning point in Alberta's resource history with the
tapping of Leduc No. 1. Later developments, such as
the blowout at oilwell Atlantic #3 to the
controversial National Energy Program, are also
explored.
Listen as former workers recall their
experiences, and muse over the end of a simpler time
in the Alberta petroleum industry. While some
contend that things today are not what they used to
be, there is a profound sense of optimism and
excitement when speculating on the future of the
Alberta oil industry.
