Johanna Haakstad

Johanna Haakstad became known as "Florence Nightingale of the North." Her first cases in the early 1920s were private homes reached by horseback. After delivering a baby, she would stay on for a week to cook and look after the entire family. Later she accommodated patients in a large house under her care. During her thirty-six years of nursing she delivered an estimated 3,100 babies, the smallest being one and a half pounds and the largest fifteen pounds.
