Birds and Waterfowl

Northern GrouseWaterfowl and upland game birds provided an additional meat supply. Waterfowl are plentiful in season, with a great variety of ducks and geese available throughout the spring, summer and early fall seasons. Black ducks are a favorite of most people in the spring, as the birds pass through on their annual migration north. Four sub-species of grouse are available the year round.

Ptarmigan is a northern bird sought for fresh food in the winter. The snowbird, also a northern bird, is eaten by some people. Raven and sparrow, northern winter birds, are not usually used as food by the bush people because ravens are scavengers and sparrows are too small.
