Nordegg Heritage Centre and Brazeau Collieries Industrial Minesite Museum
The Nordegg Heritage Centre and the Brazeau Collieries Industrial Minesite Museum are located along the David Thompson Highway. The collections at the Centre include photographs, artefacts, and archives relating to the history of the area of Nordegg, with particular emphasis on the coal mining industry. Almost all of the processing plant buildings of the Brazeau Collieries coal mine are still standing and the area is now a National Historic Site of Canada. The Nordegg Historical Society continues to restore and stabilize the mine structures, and a trail system has been constructed through the mine site.
The Nordegg Heritage Centre is the start-point for tours of the Industrial Minesite. The Coalminer’s Café, Coliseum Gift Shop, and Tourist Information Centre are also located in the Centre. Minesite tours of the Industrial Minesite are offered every day. Two tours are offered, a more general Overview Tour, which discusses technical, historical, and social aspects of the community, and a more in-depth Technical Tour that takes visitors through the briquette processing plant building and explains the mechanics of the operation. Other school tours are also available.
