Red Deer and District Museum and Archives

Red Deer and District Museum and ArchivesSinging birds, beautiful goldfish, and tropical plants greet visitors to the Red Deer and District Museum, located in downtown Red Deer. Historical exhibits reflect the diverse peoples of the Red Deer River Valley, from early First Nations cultures to the present. Local, national, and international art and human history exhibits are featured in the galleries. As a vital part of Red Deer life, the Museum provides an ideal setting for presentations by artists, educators, scholars, authors, and musicians. A variety of curriculum-based school programs provide students with "hands-on" explorations of history and art.

The Museum’s collection includes items spanning more than a century, including one of Alberta’s finest collections of clothing and textiles. An impressive collection of Inuit and First Nations art is another highlight. Tools, furniture, and household items are presented in settings reflecting their former use.

Adjacent to the museum is Heritage Square, where samples of early architecture nestle in a haven of mature trees. Brochures are available for self-guided historical walking tours of Heritage Square, Downtown Red Deer, and the Red Deer Cemetery.

The Museum Shop features a wonderful selection of books, greeting cards, souvenirs, and other unique gift items.

The Red Deer and District Archives is housed in the museum. It contains thousands of photographs and a wealth of historical information on the region.
