Central Alberta Regional Museums Network Online Catalogue

The Project

The Central Alberta Regional Museums Network Online Catalogue provides digital access to CARMN museum collections to regional, national, and international audiences. The collections have been digitized through the process of taking and editing digital photographs of the artefacts. By digitizing these objects, collections and their stories are preserved digitally, allowing them to be organized and promoted in many more ways and with further geographic reach than a traditional cataloguing system allows. Projects like this also encourage the development, management, and preservation of collections.

Museums play an important role not only in preserving and protecting Alberta’s heritage, but also in sharing it with everyone. This online catalogue brings these collections to people who may be unable to travel to the museums themselves. At the same time, the online collection introduces people to new institutions and encourages them to physically visit the museums.

The Central Alberta Regional Museums Network Online Catalogue is part of an initiative to ensure that heritage is valued by everyone. It also facilitates the sharing of information by making the collections accessible to a wider public. Students, teachers, and others are able to access information about the historical, natural, cultural, scientific, and technological heritage of the region. Members of CARMN can easily share information and can use the digital copies for future web projects. The online catalogue also contributes to provincial and national projects that are creating online catalogues and website presentations, such as Artefacts Canada.

Other galleries of digitized collections that are part of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia include Women of Aspenland, World War II: The Homefront in Alberta, City of Edmonton Archives, and Spirit of the Peace Museum Online Catalogue.
