Original Métis Communities

As Métis origins are linked to the fur trade, many of the first Métis communities were built near fur trading posts. As a distinct Métis culture emerged, so did additional communities and some Métis harvesting sites were changed into year-round communities.

The development of communities such as Lac Ste Anne, Lesser Slave Lake, Lac La Biche, and Cold Lake indicated a movement away from dependence on fur trade employment. Communities such as Tail Creek, South Branch, and Judith Basin in Montana were based on the buffalo hunt.
