Ceintures Flechées

This was a hand woven belt worn by the Métis. It was also called a Voyageur sash. The belt was made of bright colours such as red, yellow, blue, white and black. The art of weaving was passed on by the French Canadians to the Voyageurs who themselves passed it on to the Métis. The belt was used for many things. It was used to give people extra support for their backs when carrying heavy objects up steep hills. Sometimes it was used as a rope to pull objects with. Today the belt is worn by members of the Métis nation as a symbol of their pride and togetherness.
