Northwest Mounted Police

This was the first name given to what is now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The North West Mounted Police were formed in 1873 to help bring peace and order to the Canadian west. At this time there was no form of law or police force in the west. American whisky traders were causing problems in southern Alberta, so the government sent 300 men west from Manitoba to set up a police post at Fort Macleod. The North West Mounted Police restored order in southern Alberta and went on to patrol the borders and keep the peace. By 1920 the Force had become national (all over Canada) and their name was changed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
