Jimushas, Shoshoni, during visit to Butte area, Montana

Shoshoni (Shoshonee) Nation

The Shoshoni people once covered a five state area in the United States as well as Southern Alberta. When the Shoshoni obtained horses in the 1770s they became known as the ‘dreaded snakes’ and today are known as the ‘Snake Nation’. The Shoshoni who lived in what is now Alberta, resided east of the Rocky Mountains and lived in tipis and hunted buffalo, both of which are characteristic traits of Plains cultures.

Structure used for smoking hides, Cree at Saddle Lake Reserve, AB

Smoked hides

The smoking of a hide was done over a slow fire. This process made the leather more water resistant and easier to soften. The Blackfoot were one group who did not smoke hides, as they did not have a lot of access to excess wood for making fires.
