Short-horned Lizard

In Alberta, these lizards are found in the southeast corner of the province around the Medicine Hat area. Most lizards are quick to run for cover when they are threatened. The Short-horned Lizard does the opposite. Rather than running, these lizards stand still like a statue when any enemies approach. These lizards have the ability to blend in with their surroundings so enemies don’t notice them. This is called “camouflage”.

Short-horned Lizards don’t like to do a lot of work to get food! They sit and wait for food to come close to them, and then they pounce on it quickly. Most of the time they eat ants. Horned lizards are round and flat in body shape, with sharp, spiked skin and short legs. Because of this body shape the Horned lizard is slow moving.
