Fungicides

A fungicide is a chemical that is used by farmers to protect their crops from disease or insects. We put chemicals on our bodies to protect them from the sun or bugs. Farmers do the same thing to their crops.

Fungicides are commonly used to control leaf, root and seedling diseases. The treatment of cereal and canola seed with fungicides, and fungicide-insecticide combinations, has increased considerably in recent years. Approximately 95 percent of canola, 45 percent of barley, 37 percent of wheat and 15 percent of oats are treated every year with fungicides in Alberta.
