Bear and Boyer Rivers

It is normal for people to argue over what to name dogs, cats, babies and teddy bears. But did you know that people argue over the names of rivers and creeks?

There is a place near Grande Prairie that had this problem a long time ago. People who lived there called it Bear Creek, and some newspaper called it Bear River. The name it is called now is the Bear River.

The same thing happened at a place near High Level called the Boyer River. It is said to be named after Charles Boyer, a fur trader for the North West Company. On an 1854 map the same river was named the Bouee River. In the end it was the name “Boyer” that stuck.
