Samson

In Cree this means ‘touching the ground’.

Sets

A place where traps and snares are set to catch animals.

Sinew

Tough, fibrous tissue uniting muscle and bone; a tendon; usually taken from the neck of moose, deer, elk or caribou.

Skiff (Chipewyan)

A flat-bottomed boat, typically about seven metres long; used for river travel.

Smallpox

A disease that broke out on the Plains in the summer of 1781 and was followed by outbreaks in 1801, 1816, 1836 and 1869. The first outbreak struck the Shoshoni in the south to the Blackfoot. As a result of this initial outbreak, half of the Blackfoot tribe was lost. Subsequent epidemics were carried into the Plains from the east via the fur trade. The epidemic of 1836 killed another two-thirds of the Blackfoot.

Stick-built

Homes or cabins built of sawed timber i.e. lumber.

Stroud cloth

A heavy woollen cloth first made in Stroud, England
