Border Irrigation

To irrigate means to water crops by moving water through pipes or ditches to where it is needed. The pipes that carry the water can be both above and below the ground. The border strip is an area of land that has border ridges, dikes, or ditches on either side of it. These ditches guide the irrigation stream from a point or points where the water is applied to the ends of the strip. The border ditch system uses a ditch as a divider between individual strips of land. The ditch carries irrigation water that is applied at different locations along the entire length of the field. The border dike system uses dikes (embankments) on both sides of the strip and the irrigation water is supplied only at the upper end of the strip.
