Beardy, Plains Cree Chief

Beardy, Cree Chief

Beardy received his name because he could grow whiskers. He was also known as Hairy Man. It is believed that he had some European ancestors which explains why he could grow facial hair. He was slow in signing a Treaty because he wanted to negotiate for more concessions in Treaty 6. Beardy was one of few Aboriginal leaders that sided with Louis Riel in the Riel Rebellion of 1885.
