Bearspaw, Stoney Chief

Bearspaw, Stoney Chief on Horseback

Bearspaw was born in 1835 and began his career with warfare. However, inspired by the Creator, he soon realized that peace was a better option. He travelled with John McDougall to inform Aboriginal bands that the Queen had created the Northwest Mounted Police in the territory to gain control over intertribal warfare, horse stealing and the whiskey trade. Bearspaw helped translate and ask fellow Chiefs to comply with the request for peace. He was the first to sign a Treaty in 1877 and chose a reserve by Bow River and the foothills.
