Pakan, Chief

James Seenum (Pakan) and family, Whitefish Lake Reserve, AB

Born around 1842 as Jim Seenum, his family moved from Lac La Biche to Whitefish Lake with Henry Bird Steinhauer. It was there that he changed his name to Pakan, which means 'tough nut, hard to crack'. Pakan was a peaceful leader and in 1885, when the Riel Rebellion was underway, he refused to support Riel in the cause. He was involved in the signing of Treaty 6 in 1916. Pakan died in 1917 and there is no doubt he witnessed many changes in his lifetime.
