Peguis, Chief of the Saulteaux

Peguis means 'destroyer' in the Ojibwa language. Peguis was born in Sault Ste. Marie around 1774 and travelled to Red River in 1812. Peguis had a good relationship with the European settlers at Red River. After the Battle of Seven Oakes he offered to aid the settlers, a gesture virtually unheard of at the time. Peguis was one of five First Nations Chiefs who met with Lord Selkirk for the negotiation of the first Treaty of Western Canada. Lord Selkirk valued Peguis as a loyal friend of the Europeans. Peguis eventually converted to Christianity and took the name of William King. He baptized his sons with the surname Prince, and many of his ancestors can still be found today residing in Selkirk, Manitoba.
