Dave Crowchild, Sarcee Chief

Dave Crowchild was born on the Sarcee reserve in 1899. He participated in Bronc Riding at the Calgary Stampede in 1923, and in 1946 he became head Chief. He focused on increasing tribal morale and education, and promoted farming on the reserve. Crowchild was regarded as an expert negotiator and in 1947 he represented the Indian Association of Alberta in Ottawa when the Indian Act was slated for revision. Crowchild held the position of Official Secretary of the Association for ten years, and travelled with Walking Buffalo across the globe to spread their belief about peace known as the 'Moral Re-Armament Movement.' In 1967, Dave Crowchild received the Centennial Medal and in 1968 the City of Calgary named a bridge in his honour.
