Star Blanket, Chief of File Hill Cree

Chief Star Blanket

Star Blanket was born around 1840. He was involved in the signing of Treaty 4 in 1874 near Qu'Appelle. After signing the Treaty, he moved his people west for four years in search of buffalo. When he realized the buffalo were disappearing, he reluctantly returned and took a reserve at File Hills. He was regarded as a man of his word and traders knew they could give him items on credit. Star Blanket resisted the Riel Rebellion and was chosen as an influential prairie Chief and taken to Ottawa as a guest of the Prime Minister.
