Joseph La France, Coureur de bois

Joseph La France was born in 1701, likely at St. Ignace, Michigan to a French father and Ojibwe mother. He made many trips to Montreal to sell family furs, but spent at least a decade with his mother's people learning their ways. La France never obtained an official trading license even though he traded in many different areas across Canada and the United States. He travelled to London, England in 1742 where he died from fever at 36.
