Domestic

Domestics were most often young single women whom families hired to cook and clean and possibly look after their children. In Alberta and throughout the industrialized world, many girls worked as domestics to support themselves or their families. They might live in the houses where they worked, as partial payment for their services. Domestic labour was considered appropriate work for women during the early 1900's because it fitted with their traditional roles as housewives and mothers.
