We are talking about the town of Peace River here not the river itself. The coming of the railway and the growth of Peace River happened at the same time. It was a major fur-buying centre for northern Alberta, and trappers (men who trapped and killed animals for their fur) came from all over the north to sell their catches. Peace River was a centre of shipping and shipbuilding until 1952, when shipping goods by river was stopped.
