Species at Risk

Throughout the world the province of Alberta is recognized for its seemingly untouched natural beauty. While the province is, indeed, home to some of the most breathtaking scenery, it is also home to very aggressive farming, oil and gas development, mining, and forestry industries which, combined with the development of roads and railways and the encroachment of urban centres, have greatly impacted the natural balance throughout the province - placing many species at risk.

Species at risk, also known as endangered species, are those in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of their home range. A "threatened" species is one that is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Here we would like to profile some of the 17 endangered and 7 threatened species which are at risk in the province in order not only to raise awareness of the problem, but also to suggest ways in which we may all help to protect them and, hopefully, prevent other species from becoming endangered.
