A Plaque at the Father Lacombe Chapel

Father Lacombe Chapel

Father Albert Lacombe of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate was one of Alberta's best known early missionaries. His work among the Indian tribes earned him the names "The Black Robe" and "The Beautiful Soul" by the Cree and "The Man with Good Heart" by the Blackfoot.

This building served as the chapel for the St. Albert Mission for more than a decade and then as the cathedral of the St. Albert diocese prior to the construction of a larger church in 1870. Although it has been disassembled, moved and restored, the chapel remains the oldest known standing structure in Alberta.

Upon recommendation of the Hon. Horst Schmid, Minister of Culture, the Father Lacombe Chapel was designated a provincial historic resource on July 13, 1977.
