Considering the large concentration of Franco-Albertans in the surrounding areas, it is not surprising that the provincial headquarters of the Association Canadienne-Francaise de l’Alberta (ACFA) are located in Edmonton. Formed in 1925, ACFA has acted as the guardian of French culture in Alberta. The local branch in St. Paul was founded in 1928 and currently boasts upwards of 500 members. ACFA and its affiliates are immersed in all aspects of Franco-Albertan life, from politics and economic development to media and language. In St. Paul, the activities of ACFA are focused around the town’s Cultural Centre. In 1968, the Cultural Centre was originally located in an early school in the town. Although a fire destroyed the first locale, the community centre was rebuilt in the shell of the old building.
