The Louise McKinney memorial plaque on the day it was commemorated in June of 1947 in Claresholm, AlbertaPublic recognition of the Famous 5 was once slow in coming, but in recent years, the media and Canadians alike have begun to remember and acknowledge the profound effect this group of women has had on Canadian culture.

A large part of recognizing the achievements of the Famous 5 rests in remembering them. Even a quick exploration of their lives and leadership indicates that although they are historical figures, their spirit of strength and tenacity is valid in a present day context.

Programme booklet for the opening of a park and unveiling of a plaque dedicated to Irene ParlbyAs Canada chooses to commemorate the Famous 5, citizens should reflect upon the rights and freedoms they championed for all Canadians and remember not to take such rights for granted as they were won only a relatively short time ago. The legacy of the Famous 5 should also function as an inspiration, empowering each of us by acknowledging that right placed effort and determination can affect significant change and growth.
