Barbara Paterson with her sculpture of Louise McKinney On October 18, 1999, in celebration of the 70 anniversary of the Persons’ Case, the Famous 5 Foundation unveiled to Calgary the first monument to commemorate the achievements of Canada’s Famous 5. A year later, a similar monument was erected on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, marking national recognition of the nation builders many had forgotten.

Famous 5 monument at Olympic Plaza in Calgary The Famous 5 Foundation commissioned artist Barbara Paterson to create the monuments. Paterson holds a Diploma in Fine Arts with a major in Painting, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Sculpture from the University of Alberta. She specializes in a variety of sculpture media including wax, stone, bronze, and welded steel.

Her outdoor life-size bronzes can be seen at St. Albert City Hall, in the Ghosts Project in Red Deer and in an elementary school in Edmonton. Her work is represented in the following collections: the Edmonton Opera Society, St. Alberta Public Library, Faculty of Education of the University of Alberta, the MacKay Avenue Museum, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the American Kennel Club. In 1995 and again in 1997, Barbara Paterson was the only Canadian artist invited to exhibit her sculpture in the House of Humour and Satire in Gabrova, Bulgaria.
