Situated along the Medicine River west of Red Deer, Markerville is
the historic heart of Icelandic Alberta. The district was
first named Tindastoll by the early Icelandic
settlers. Tindastoll or loosely
translated as "mountain chair"in Icelandic, was
named for its location within sight of the Rock Mountains.
Stephansson House is the original site of the poet Stephan G.
Stephansson's homestead, established with his wife Helga and their
family. this Heritage Trail audio feature presents
historian Lisa Mort-Putland speaking about Stephansson's journey
to Alberta, the building of the Stephansson house and its
restoration as an important historic site.
