Japanese people began migrating to the prairies in the early
1900s. Those who settled in Raymond, Alberta, continued observing
the most important festival of their Buddhist tradition, Feast for
the Ancestors or Oban. The festival honours the people that have
gone before them. Listen to this Heritage Trail!
Buddhists
have a mid-winter celebration called the Feast of Enlightenment.
This celebration holds many similarities to Christmas, the holiday
of Christian faith. One striking similarity is the Buddhist Tree
of Enlightenment, which bears a strong resemblance to the
Christian Christmas tree.
