Italian Women's Society of Santa Maria Goretti Church

The Italian Women's Society of Santa Maria Goretti Church is a non-profit organization. Their objectives are to promote awareness of Italian culture in the Italian community; to grant three annual scholarships; and to present annual awards to individuals for their contribution to the community.

The Society was formed in 1986 on the initiative and suggestion of its founder, Father Augusto Feccia, former Pastor of the Santa Maria Goretti Parish in Edmonton, the National Congress of Italian Canadians, Edmonton District, and other Italian societies and organizations.

The Society organizes and hosts a number of events throughout the year. The Society's Calendar of Events may include an annual Spring Fashion Show "Moda Primavera", an annual Bake Sale, and an Annual Gala.

In the past, through these and other events the Italian Women's Society has supported such organizations and causes as WIN House and WINGS Shelters for women and children, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Share Lent Program to help feed the poor in third world countries, Earthquake Victims Relief, Youth Emergency Shelter, Project Millennium at Santa Maria Goretti Italian Parish, and its annual education scholarships awarded to students at both the high school and university levels.

At the 2002 Gala held in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Education Scholarships, the Society honored Fr. Giovanni Bonelli, one of the founding fathers of the Santa Maria Goretti Parish in Edmonton.

One of the goals of the Italian Women's Society is to help preserve and promote the Italian language and culture. It strives to do this through its established scholarships and links with the School Board and University of Alberta.

For the past number of years, the Italian Women's Society has endeavored to promote the Italian culture and local talent, both from the Italian community and the community at large. At its 2001 Gala the Italian Women's Society commemorated the 100th anniversary of the death of Italian operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi. In recognition and celebration of Verdi's life and contribution to the world of opera and classical music, the Society hosted a musical and operatic tribute of Verdi's works. At both the Mother's Day and Father's Day events the Society has featured talented musicians, young vocalists, and dancers.
