There continued to be rapid developments in the technology of
flight after the Second World War. These changes included the
advancement of all-metal airliners that could carry 52 to over
250 passengers.
Shortly after the war, the DC-6 was developed, and it became
the first airliner used on scheduled flights around the world.
Airliners and military aircraft shifted from piston-engines
to jet engines in the late 1940s and 1950s. With the development
of jet airliners, aircraft could fly at greater ranges and carry
more passengers and cargo.
