The geographic location of Edmonton made it the host to many
pioneering developments in aviation. Edmonton was the natural
choice for basing any aviation effort that would supply the
north, and this reality brought with it the need for an
airfield.
The Blatchford Field in Edmonton was established right after
the First World War and received support from the municipal and
federal governments. These early developments made it the first
official "Air Harbour" in Canada.
The location of the Blatchford Field guaranteed that it would
grow and be the centre of ever-increasing activity. It was the
busiest airfield in all of North America during the Second World
War.
