During the Second World War Canada became the largest centre for
the training of aircrew for the Allied cause when it became the
host of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
Canada was given assurances by the British government that
its main contribution to the war would be the training of aircrew.
The result was that schools and facilities were established
across the nation to assist in the training
of military aircrew, with the
Prairie Provinces hosting a large number of such schools.
