Harold Heacock

Mr. Heacock was born in Athabaska in the 1920s. Athabaska was a staging area for many of the bush pilots in Alberta’s north, as a boy he had contact with a number of the pilots, and they influenced his decision to become a pilot. At the outbreak of World War II he wanted to enlist in the air force, but he was told that there was a long waiting list. So, he joined the RCMP as a temporary sub-constable, did hos training at Regina and was stationed at Halifax. A year later he was called up by the air force, was trained under the BCATP and was deployed to England. Though he did fly Spitfires and Hurricanes he had arrived too late to see much combat. After the war he rejoined the RCMP, entered their aviation unit and was stationed out of Edmonton and Fort Smith, making numerous flights in the north with Beechcraft and Norseman aircraft. He was involved in numerous mercy flights and air rescues. He left the RCMP in 1967 and became a civil aviation inspection.
