Print, Photographic

Print, Photographic
A photograph of the history of the Royal Air Force Upwood station. The print has line drawings of all the aircraft that have flown from the base. There is also a line drawing of the station crest. The print measures approx 20 inches by 16 inches. The history is as follows: An airfield was first established at Upwood in 1917 as a base of Nos, 190 & 191 (Night Training) Squadrons, equipped with Avro 504s, F.E.2bs and B.E. 2es. In 1919 the squadrons were disbanded and the airfield reverted to farmland. Early in 1937, under the general expansion programme, the present station came into being, two light bomber squadrons - Nos 52 & 63 - being its original operational complement. In March 1937 the squadrons were equipped with Hawker Hinds and Audaxes, these being replaced by Fairy Battles as soon as they became available. When World War II broke out in September 1939, Nos 52 & 63 Squadrons and their Battles moved out making was for the Blenhiems of Nos 35 & 90 Squadrons which combined to form the basis of No 17 (Blenheim) Operational Training Unit. Operational training was Upwood's role until May 1943, over 1500 aircrew being trained on the station during this period. A short reconstruction period (June to December 1943), during which concrete runways were laid, followed and then the station became the base for two Pathfinder squadrons, Nos 139 & 156, equipped with Mosquitoes and Lancasters. 139 and 156 continued to operate from Upwood until the war ended and they were joined in late 1945 by another Mosquito squadron, No 105. While Upwood was operational from February 1944 to May 1945 - its squadrons mounted 6,000 sorties including 36 consecutive night attacks against Berlin. The station itself was attacked seven times during this time but sustained no great damage. For a short period after the war Upwood was part of Transport Command. From February to July of 1946 the Liberators of 53 Squadron, ex-Coastal Command operated as air troopers between the station and India. In July 1946 the station returned to Bomber Command operating Lancasters and later Lincolns, the squadrons concerned being Nos 7, 49, 148, & 214. The Lincolns of these squadrons distinguished themselves on detachments in Kenya during the campaign against the Mau Mau in Malays, in South Arabia and in the Persian Gulf. The Lincoln was the last of the RAF's piston-engined bombers; Upwood's Lincoln squadrons were disbanded during the course of 1955 and the station entered the final phase of it operational flying history entirely re-equipped with Canberra, Canberra squadrons operating from Upwood included Nos 18, 21, 35, 40, 61, 76, & 109. The principal Canberra units until 1960 at Upwood were 76 and 35 Squadrons. 76 was disbanded in 1960 and the last squadron to operate from the station, No. 35, disbanded in September 1961. One of 35's Canberra, WJ642, still stands at the gates of the station. The aircraft drawings are all to the same scale: 6ft:1 in.
