University of Alberta

University of Alberta LogoEstablished in 1908, the University of Alberta is proud of its position as one of Canada's "foremost research-intensive universities." The University, located in Edmonton, plays a vital role in the economic strength of the city as well as the province. With over 32,000 students, the U of A's community represents an important sector of the Albertan population—highly skilled individuals who can contribute to the province's knowledge-based economy.

The University is the largest research establishment in Alberta, with researchers functioning in 21 of the 22 federal networks of "Centres of Excellence" that unite industry, universities and governments in applied research and development. The research funding for the U of A was more than $300 million CDN in 2001/2002. The latest research endeavour involving the University of Alberta is the National Institute for nanotechnology, a $120 million CDN institute for research, innovation and commercialization of nanotechnologies. This project is a joint venture between the University, the National Research Council of Canada and the Alberta government.
