Inventor: Clark, Karl Adolf

Location: Edmonton

Comments: b 1888, Ontario; McMaster; PhD University of Illinois (1915); Geological Survey of Canada; first employee of Alberta Research Council 1920; professor at Alberta 1938-1954; d 1966; hot water extraction process of extracting bitumen from mined oil sands is today integral to bitumen separation techniques still employed at Syncrude and Suncore; extensive information available at University of Alberta Archives

Description: Karl Adolf Clark, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Application March 26, 1945, Serial No. 524,906
3 Claims

Claim.—1. In a process of separating oil from bituminous sand by pulping and heating such sands with water and subsequently washing the pulp in warm or hot water and floating the oil as an oil froth in a one stage operation, the step of limiting the lifting power of the oil froth to a degree sufficient to float all the oil and less than 5 per cent of the sand.

2. In a process of separating oil from bituminous sand by pulping and heating such sands with water and subsequently washing the pulp in warm or hot water and then floating the oil in an oil froth in a one stage operation, the step of limiting the content of air or other gases in the said froth to an amount sufficient to float the oil, and insufficient to carry more than 5 per cent sand.

3. In a process of separating oil from bituminous sand wherein the sand is pulped and heated with water, dropping such pulp in a body of hot water and limiting the quantity of air in said pulp to a quantity sufficient to only float the oil with less than 5 per cent of sand, wherein the oil is released from the sand without subsequent re-treatment of the sand.
