John L. Edlund (1873-1957)
John Edlund came to his new home on Canada Day, 1904, after three weeks at
sea with his wife and children. Born in Botne, Norway to Swedish parents
in 1873, Edlund took his family and photography business half way around
the world to Claresholm, Alberta to join the rest of the Edlund family.
He worked at a creamery for a short while before buying a photography shop
in town, where he would work on the weekdays, returning to the family farm
for the weekends. Eventually, the Edlunds moved into town, renovating the
shop to call it a home. He soon began working in local theatres, often
bringing the children in to help him out with ticket sales or the
projector. He managed Rex Theatre in Claresholm, and operated other
establishments in High River and Turner Valley.
Edlund retired in 1929 to devote more time to his inventions and, in 1931,
he and his wife moved to Calgary. He patented nine of his creations
between 1916 and 1957, including the famous lifesaving suitcase, and a
faucet, which claimed to run without leaks, drips or chatters.
