Car Propelling Mechanism (Patent No: 91538)

Inventor: Gibeau, Henry

Location: Frank

Comments: N/A

Description: Henry Gibeau, Frank, Alberta, Canada, 14th February, 1905; 6 years. Filed 27th September, 1904. Receipt No. 118,738.

Claim.—1. In a car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable and a car frame with a driving shaft, a fixed axle secured on said frame parallel to the car axles, a wheel mounted rotatively on said axles, means of transmitting motion from the driving shaft to said disc, a series of clamps radially disposed on said wheel and pivoted to its face and a cam mounted non-rotatably on said axle between said wheel face and said clamp ends and provided with a swell adapted to press the inner end of the lowermost clamp outwards so as to press the opposite end inwards towards the wheel when the cable is between said parts, substantially as set forth.

2. In car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable, a car, a driving shaft journalled on said car, a fixed axle fitted on said car parallel to the car axles, a grip wheel mounted rotatively on said axle with its face adjacent to the cable, projecting rim on the face of said wheel forming a shoulder against which the cable is drawn, a series of clamps pivoted to the face of the wheel and disposed radially thereon, a cam mounted non-rotatably on said axle between the wheel face and the inner clamp ends and having a swell vertically under the axle and adapted to tilt the lowermost clamp so that its outer end presses the cable against the wheel face and means of commnnicating motion from the driving shaft to tlie grip wheel, substantially as set forth.

3. In a car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable, a car, a driving shaft journalled on said far, a fixed axle fitted on said car parallel to the car axles, a grip wheel mounted relatively on said axle, a shouldered rim on the face of said wheel near its periphery forming a bearing for the cable, a series of clamps pivoted to the face of the wheel and disposed radially thereon, a cam mounted non-rotatively on said axle between the wheel face and the inner clamp ends adapted to tilt the clamps as they pass over it and a cam disc mounted non-rotatably on said axle adjacent to the clamps on the grip wheel and having a projecting cam-faced hub end the counterpart of the cam above referred to and having on the face of the disc a projecting swell bearing on the grip clamp opposite the cable, substantially as set forth.

4. In car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable, a car, a driving shaft journalled on said car, a fixed axle fitted on said car parallel to the car axles, a grip wheel mounted rotatively on said axle but without longitudinal motion and provided on its face with a projecting shoulder forming a bearing for the cable, a series of clamps pivoted to the face of the grip wheel and disused radially thereon and adapted to press the cable against the wheel, a cam disc mounted non-rotatably on the axle adjacent to said clamps and having a swell adapted to press the lowermost clamp toward the wheel, friction rollers in the clamps at the bearing surfaces of said swell and means of communicating motion from the power shaft to the grip disc, substantially as set forth.

5. In car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable, a car, a driving shaft journalled on said car, a fixed axle fitted on said car parallel to the car axles, a grip wheel mounted rotatively on said axle, a collar on said axle preventing longitudinal movement of said grip wheel, a series of clamps pivoted to the face of the grip wheel and disposed radially thereon, and adapted to press the cable against the wheel, a cam mounted non-rotatively on said axle and adapted to tilt said clamps, a cam disc mounted non-rotatively on said axle and adapted to operate said clamps, means of communicating the motion of the power shaft to the grip wheel, a bevelled hub to said cam disc and a bevelled hub mounted relatively on said axle and provided with a lever for turning the same, substantially as set forth.

6. In car propelling mechanism, the combination of a track, a stationary cable, a car, a driving shaft journalled on said car, a pin-on mounted thereon, a fixed axle fitted on said car parellel to the power shaft, a spur wheel gearing into said pinion and mounted on said fixed axle and bearing against a collar on one side, a grip wheel formed integrally with said spur wheel, a series of clamps pivoted to the face of said grip wheel and disposed radially thereon, and means of operating said clamps so as to press the cable against the disc, substantially as set forth.
